Settling-In Guide
Your First Month in Cyprus: A Settling-In Checklist (2025)
Welcome to Cyprus! The first few weeks after your move are a whirlwind of excitement and essential errands. Getting organized early will set the stage for a smooth transition. This week-by-week checklist from CyExpats.com breaks down the most critical tasks to tackle in your first month on the island.
Pro Tip: Don't try to do everything at once. Government offices have specific opening hours, and things often move at the famous "siga-siga" (slowly, slowly) pace. Tackle one or two major tasks per day and enjoy the process of discovering your new home.

Your Week-by-Week Action Plan
Week 1: The Essentials for Survival
Get a Local SIM Card
This is your top priority. You'll need a Cypriot phone number for everything from real estate agents to bank applications. Buy a prepaid (Pay As You Go) SIM card from any kiosk (periptero) or a provider's store at the airport or in town. All you need is your passport.
Confirm Your Housing
If you rented from abroad, visit the property immediately to ensure everything is as agreed. If you're in temporary accommodation, start your apartment hunting now. Contact real estate agents and schedule viewings.

Explore Your Neighbourhood
Walk around your local area. Find the nearest supermarket, pharmacy, bakery (zacharoplasteio), and coffee shop. Understanding your immediate surroundings will help you feel at home faster.
Week 2: The Bureaucracy Begins
Book Your Immigration Appointment
This is a critical step. Find the contact details for your local Civil Registry and Migration Department (Immigration Office) and book an appointment to submit your residency application (MEU1 for EU citizens, Pink Slip for non-EU). Appointments can be weeks away, so book it now.
Open a Bank Account
Book an appointment at your chosen bank. Bring all your prepared documents (passport, proof of address, reference letter, etc.). Getting a local bank account is essential for signing a lease and setting up utilities.
Learn the Bus Routes
If you don't have a car, figure out the local bus system. Use the Cyprus Public Transport website or apps like Pame App to plan journeys. Knowing how to get to the immigration office or city center is empowering.

Weeks 3 & 4: Setting Up Your Life
Attend Immigration Appointment
Go to your scheduled appointment with all your original documents and photocopies. Submit your application for residency. This is a major milestone!
Set Up Home Utilities
Once your lease is signed and your bank account is open, you can set up electricity, water, and internet. You will likely need to visit their local offices with your rental agreement and pay a deposit.

Register with a Personal Doctor (GP)
If you are eligible for GESY (the public healthcare system), now is the time to register online and choose your GP. This ensures you have access to healthcare when you need it.
Start Building a Community
Join local expat groups on Facebook. Visit a local coffee shop regularly. Introduce yourself to neighbours. Building a social network is key to long-term happiness, and it's never too early to start.
